This Season at Floating Opera New York

Our 2015/16 Season is the virgin launch of the company.  Our season opens with Pelleas and Melisande, one of the masterpieces of the operatic repertoire.  This opera is Debussy's only full-length opera, with libretto by the Symbolist poet, Maurice Maeterlinck. We're setting sail on Debussy's sea for our first season on the gorgeous and spirited 100 year old railroad barge, Lehigh Valley No. 79, who is moored in one of Brooklyn's most artistically exciting areas on the water, Red Hook. The barge is the only surviving all-wood Hudson River Railroad Barges of the Lighterage Age, 1860-1960 (Debussy's dates are 1862-1916!)

Our cast of Pelleas and Melisande features Christopher Herbert as Pelleas, Aude Cardona as Melisande, Sidney Outlaw as Golaud, Stephen Fredericks as Arkel and Jazmin DeRice as Genevieve.  Music direction and piano brilliance by Eric Kramer. The barge is an exquisite environment for this piece both because of her air of mystery, her dark corners, but also the gentle caress of the waters of the Hudson.   More on Pelleas...

Our second event of the season is John Cage's EUROPERAS 3 & 4.  These are two chance operation operas based on the Chinese ancient text the I Ching. This large production consists of many singers, two grand pianos, 100 lights and many chances.  This event is not only the opportunity for those who would like to experience the theatrical side of Cage, but for those who would like to learn more about Mushrooms!   Mycology is the study of mushrooms and Mycophagy (the eating of mushrooms).  While we won't be foraging for mushrooms, we will indulge in the non-hallucinogenic types.   Along with the performances of EUROPERAS 3 & 4, there will be a mushroom tasting and short guided culinary tour of mushroom treats.  The evening then will finish with dancing!  Come one, come all, bring a bottle of wine and your dancing shoes!   More on EUROPERAS...
